- 2 tablespoons butter
- 8 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
- 8 slices French bread
